AlbumArte has already investigated the world of AI and algorithms, on the occasion of the collective exhibition with the winning projects of the first edition of RE: HUMANISM, the first prize dedicated to the relationship between art and artificial intelligence curated by Daniela Cotimbo. Now we decide to take it up again by presenting this newly released book with critics who have addressed this topic in their research.
Mind the Gap reinterprets the epochal changes that followed the information age in the kaleidoscopic gaze of art. The technology applied to biology, its extension to ecology, the merging entirely into the algorithmic landscape are found in artistic experiments recognized in genres such as: nanoart, bioart, meteorological and ecological art, network art (net art and post-internet) . Grown for the most part in a context of specialized niches, they reveal precious points of view to retrace history backwards, to be able to slow it down and focus on some aspects and moments, previously unnoticed, in reality central. Different topics, such as art and climate, art and bio-technology, art and blockchain, are crossed to reconnect areas that are often dealt with by sector. Through the works, Mind the Gap focuses on the liminal spaces (in between) and it try to identify as many as possible. Apparent voids, they are rather links between topics, disciplines, artistic genres and so on. Even institutions, spaces interposed between the work and the public, can become accomplices in shaking the attention from addiction to reality. Works-operations at the crossroads between art, science and technology, with their ability to interpose liminally between disciplines, conquer privileged observation points. Observing is equivalent to acting, to enter into symbiosis with life itself, to penetrate its gears. The essay is conceived as a reflection intended for students, scholars, but also to a general public and intends to lend itself to multiple levels of reading.
The text runs at a rapid pace, oscillating between what art sees and the methods used; looks that have been able to grasp the invisible long before proof of its existence was returned. Adopting them can mean changing the way we see and tell. This is one of many possible stories.
Elena Giulia Rossi is an art curator and researcher. Her interests have found themselves at the crossroads of biology, technology and science. She is the founder and editorial director of the online platform Arshake (www.arshake.com) and teaches Net Art and Theory of Multimedia Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome.
Valentina Tanni is an art historian and an art curator. She teaches at the Milan Polytechnic and at the NABA in Rome, collaborates with Artribune and she is a member of the Board of Directors of the Rome Quadriennale. Her latest book is Memestetica. The eternal September of art (Nero, 2020).
Antonello Tolve is the holder of Pedagogy and Didactics of Art at the Albertina in Turin and he is the Director of the Filiberto and Bianca Menna Foundation. Among his latest books Me myself and I (2019), Education and Catastrophe (2019), Atmosfera (2019), Lamberto Pignotti (2020).
