Raffaela Mariniello was born in Naples, where she currently lives and works. She began her activity as a photographer for a few photojournalism agencies after high school. These are the years of the earthquake in Naples and the experience of a city that is constantly at the center of the news, causes a glance towards the urban landscape to emerge. The confrontation and the reflection towards social and cultural thematics render her artistic research particularly sensible to the relationship between man, everyday objects and the place of residence. In 1991, when the steel manufacturers definitely closed the Italsider company of Bagnoli, a photography campaign of the factory began. Until today this work is the only historic testimonial on the activity of the steel plant: Bagnoli, a factory (Bagnoli, una fabbrica – catalogue Electa, Naples 1991) was – between 1992 and 1995- exhibited in Naples, Nantes, Calais, Paris and Milan. Naples imaginary view (Naples veduta immaginaria – catalogue Motta Editore, Milan 2001) is the last series of images of Naples (exhibited at the Maschio Angioino Museum of Naples, in the Lawrence Rubin Gallery of Milan and the Ronchini di Terni Gallery). She participated with Daniel Buren in the artistic intervention project ARIN promoted by Incontri Internazionali d’Arte (catalogue Arin-Buren, Naples 2004). The last publication Raffaela Mariniello (catalogue Fotogallery editions, Cardiff, Wales, U.K. 2006) is a collection of images of Cardiff, Wales, requested by the City and the Fotogallery. The works were exhibited at the Turner House Gallery of Cardiff in October 2005.
With the video installation Over and over of 2005 at the Trisorio of Rome, at the Pan of Naples and the Man of Nuoro, opened her research to new expressive methods.
Souvenirs d’ Italie, the most recent cycle of work started in 2006 , comprises a body of thirty photographs and a video . It describes the image of an Italy crossed in town centers , where between consumption and mass tourism , the country seems to be a strange and exotic destination. Raffaela Mariniello participates in many collective exhibits in Italy and abroad, among which the XII Quadriennale d’arte of Rome (1996) and the VIII Biennale di Fotografia of Turin (1999), Festival della Fotografia of Rome (2002, 2005, 2008). MOCA Musuem of Contemporary Art, Shanghai (2006). Contact – Toronto Photography Festival (2008). Museum MAXXI, Rome (2010), Museum MADRE, Naples (2011), Museum of Palazzo Fortuny, Venice (2011).
