Saturday, September 25 opens at AlbumArte, the solo exhibition of Estibaliz Sádaba Murguía (Bilbao, 1963) entitled SUBVERSIONES, which will be on display in the space until October 28.

The project won the prestigious call from Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) the public institution dedicated to promoting Spanish culture and artistic heritage in Spain and around the world, and Etxepare Euskal Institutua, which promotes the international presence of Basque artists. The project is carried out in collaboration with the Real Academia de España en Roma, where the artist has been a resident (2018-2019).

This exhibition inaugurates the tenth year of activity of AlbumArte.

The artist is also in charge of the curatorship, as is often the case with her projects.

We met Estibaliz feminist Basque artist, when she was in residence at the Real Academia de España en Roma, in the winter of 2018 – 2019 and we immediately began to dialogue about a possible shared project, being AlbumArte always open to the feminist issue. Even today, planning her exhibition (delayed due to the border closures of the past winter) we realized that since the beginning of 2021we have only realized exhibitions by female artists.

And it is precisely on the woman and her isolation within the domestic sphere and her marginalization from the public sphere and the area of power sharing, that the Basque feminist artist wants to investigate with her solo exhibition at AlbumArte, with her new project, in which she will present a series of works, made with different techniques, such as photography, collage and video. In recent years, the artist’s work has focused on investigating this relationship from an experimental perspective. An artistic practice that has always integrated feminist theory and activism, with the desire to create networks and establish genealogies through actions, in which the body becomes an instrument, a place of experimentation, and which are then subsequently reworked and reconstructed through various processes, such as editing, in films, post production in photographic works or the unexpected reassembly of stereotyped images.

For the unpublished video that gives the title to the exhibition, in Italian Sovversioni domestiche, started as a research during her residency at the Real Academia de España en Roma and realized on the occasion of the exhibition, the artist starts from a reflection on the way in which women have been relegated to the “domestic space”: that space of family refuge in which men rested after their “exposure” to public space, and in which women in the meantime had managed the care of children and family goods, and which becomes a place of psychological and social confinement. She worked with the texts of two important Italian feminist thinkers and activists of the 70s, Silvia Federici and Mariarosa Dalla Costa, who intervene in the video, theorizing on the method to reinterpret the domestic space, looking for an egalitarian space that allows women to generate a new way of interaction and socialization.

An exhibition on how to subvert this space of confinement, and bring that struggle out of the kitchen, into the streets, reclaiming a place in the public space that is more than due: even today, after the pandemic, we can’t start again without women!
