The exhibition WHEN IN ROME. Beyond the boundries of the Skin, curated by Adriana Polveroni, with new and site-specific artworks by Verdiana Bove, Guglielmo Maggini, Pietro Moretti, Caterina Sammartino, Adelisa Selimbašić is the central stage of the travelling project When in Rome, which will be realised in seven Italian cities in collaboration with Adiacenze Bologna and Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia, Accademia di Belle Arti di Frosinone, RUFA – Rome University of Fine Arts, Casa degli Artisti Milano, Mucho Mas! Turin, Toast Project Space Florence, Zona Rosa Napoli, CONDOTTO48 Rome.

Previewed at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice on 10 June 2024, When in Rome foresees, in addition to the exhibition in Rome from 18 November 2024 to 4 January 2025, a public program with the public at Casa degli Artisti in Milan, Zona Rosa in Naples, Toast Project Space in Florence, Mucho Mas! in Turin, and concluding in Bologna with the second stage of the exhibition at Adiacenze, a space for research and experimentation in contemporary visual arts, from 9 to 23 January 2025.

When in Rome, abbreviated from When in Rome, do as the Romans do, draws on the tradition of foreigners adapting to Roman ways, inspired by the city’s allure and lifestyle, while also referencing the title of a well-known 2007 Genesis concert.

The heart of this project is the research conducted by Cristina Cobianchi and Adriana Polveroni on emerging talents under 35 based in Rome, especially in artist-run spaces managed by younger curators, often located in the city’s borders—in repurposed factories, old work spaces, disused garages, and artisan spaces. These young artists are reshaping Rome’s cultural landscape through a dynamic, present-focused research and a polyphonic dialogue.

The exhibition by Verdiana Bove, Guglielmo Maggini, Pietro Moretti, Caterina Sammartino, and Adelisa Selimbašić reflects theirs reflection on the theme, Beyond the boundaries of skin, and includes new, site-specific artworks exploring the concept of marginality as a “boundary that separates,” much like skin demarcates the body from its environment while forming its first point of contact and first opportunity of knowledge. Today, as the body undergoes radical shifts amid various social and cultural tensions, skin still serves as its defining boundary.

Each artist brings an original interpretation to the concept of “skin” and the urge to move “beyond the boundaries of skin”—beyond established limits, not necessarily to overcome them in a titanic effort, but rather to explore the margins in a peripheric way, but to explore them as a main decentered body that make up the body of art itself—a vast and inexhaustible alphabet of artistic practices.

The phrase ”Beyond the Boundaries of Skin” signifies the necessity to engage fully in the present, fostering multi-voiced dialogue. Applied to Rome, often viewed as a Great Mother, both revered and damned, the city becomes a vast organism, a privileged site for observation and inquiry, offering new opportunities for artistic expression and new interpretative paths.

Verdiana Bove (Rome, 1996) lives and works in Rome. She is a co-founder of the Artist-Run Space CONDOTTO48. She has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions in Rome and throughout Italy, including: La Luce abbraccia tutto – Verdiana Bove e Luigi Ghirri, EDDart Palazzo Taverna, Roma (2023), Quando cosa felice cade, Le Nuove Stanze, Arezzo (2023) e Nuove vedute di Roma, Laboratorio KH, Roma (2022). In her artistic research she uses  family photos and personal collections, used as starting point to mix real memories and dreamlike atmospheres.

Guglielmo Maggini (Rome, 1992), has a degree in architecture and a Master in Visual Arts from UAL – Camberwell College of Arts in London. He participated in numerous exhibitions including Stairing – installazione permanente, Museo Internazionale delle Ceramiche, Faenza (2024); Contrappunti, z2o Sara Zanin Gallery, Roma (2024); Biennale di Gubbio Palazzo Ducale, Gubbio (2023). His works, between installation and sculpture,  redefine the space as a plastic volume. Synthetic materials such as rubber, resins and clay, are used to create a relationship between life and death, through a journey into historical and personal memory.

Pietro Moretti (Rome, 1996), lives and works in Berlin, holds a Bachelor’s in Art from the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL, London. He has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions including: Il faló dei gonfiabili, Collezione Iannaccone, Milano (2023); Le storture del cactus, Galleria Doris Ghetta, Milano (2023); Pittura Italiana Oggi, Triennale, Milano (2023); Sensing painting, Castello di Rivoli, Torino (2023). Most of his paintings depict adolescence and ritual groups, topic moments fixed in memory using the painting as “an instrument to focus the reality between memories and imagination”.

Caterina Sammartino (Rome, 1997), graduate in painting from the Academy of Fine Arts, is a co-founder of the Artist-Run Space CONDOTTO48. Her recent exhibitions include: The Sun at Its Zenith, ERA Gallery, Milano (2024); Shaping grace and disquiet, ERA Gallery, Milano (2024); L’Ombra Lunga, Palazzo Rospigliosi, Zagarolo (2024); RESENTI, Palazzo Lucarini, Trevi (2023); Botanica, EDDart, Roma (2022); VII Biennale di Viterbo Arte Contemporanea, Viterbo (2022); Materia Nova – Roma nuove generazioni a confronto, Galleria d’Arte Moderna di Roma (2021). In her research she prefers to use the installation, using natural origins materials as well as old everyday objects, reconnecting them with the space, using hemp, cotton and performances with a strong symbolic and relational sense.

Adelisa Selimbašić (Malsch Kreis Karlsruhe-Germany, 1996), an Italian-Bosnian artist based in New York and a graduate of the Venice Academy of Fine Arts. She has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions including: : Dust Bunny, Z2o Sara Zanin Gallery, Roma (2024), Perché è così difficile dichiararsi?, Galleria IPERCUBO, Milano (2023); Beacon in the Bowery- Azuki Furuya, Fridman gallery, New York, USA (2023); Collective exhibitions: Soft Focus, Bradley Ertaskiran gallery, Montreal (2024); An Avarage Comet, Harkawik gallery, New York (2024). She also participated at Fountainhead residency in Miami, USA (2023). Her artworks depict full canvas bodies or faces, apparently reassuring giant body portions, joyful young women in a solo women universe, whose understanding is left to the viewer.
